Islamic Ruling on Copyright Violations
Islam strictly protects the property and rights of individuals.
Allah the Exalted says (what means):
• “O you who have believed, fulfil all contracts.” — al-Ma’idah (5:1)
• “Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly.” — al-Baqarah (2:188)
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
• “Whoever cheats is not from us.” and
• “Muslims follow the conditions they agree to.”
He also said: “Muslims are bound by their conditions.” — Abu Dawood
These evidences clearly establish the sanctity of property rights in Islam and the obligation to respect agreements — including copyright protection.
Many senior scholars, including Imam al-Albani (rahimahullah) and Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan (hafidhahullah), have publicly condemned copyright violations and clarified that such actions are sinful and impermissible. Their fatawa are well known and widely accessible.
Ethical Reminder & Accountability
Producing authentic Islamic works requires significant financial investment and thousands of hours of translation, editing, proofreading, typesetting, design, printing, and distribution. Illegal sharing harms Islamic publishers, harms the spread of authentic knowledge, and harms the Ummah.
Violators of copyright will be held accountable both in this world and the Hereafter, as every unjust act will be brought to account before Allah, the All-Just.
We urge the you to seek knowledge through halal and ethical means, avoid supporting unauthorized websites or distributors, and refrain from engaging in or promoting unlawful activities.
A Lesson from the Salaf
Abu Bakr ibn Abi Asim (rahimahu-Allah) said:
“When times were difficult in Basrah, I lost all of my books, so I wrote fifty thousand hadith from memory. I would pass by a store and use the brightness of its light to write. After realizing I had not sought permission from the store owner, I went to the sea, erased everything I wrote, and rewrote it again (later).” — Siyaar al-Salaf al-Asbahani, 4/1302 (Translated by Abu Aisha)
This teaches us the great respect the early scholars had for the rights of others — even in matters far smaller than copyright.
